Interview with Iryna Ivanets from Ukraine: My experiences in learning German

About challenges, chances and inspiration – Part 2

Iryna Ivanets has been living in Germany since three years. She successfully passed the German B2 exam and is now working on the C1 certificate. In our interview, she is talking about her experiences in learning German and is telling us her tips for learning German.

1. Iryna, what does the German language mean to you?

Knowing a language is key to everything – whether it is going to the doctor, filling out important documents, taking out insurance or taking the children to school. Without sufficient language skills, you often feel helpless. That is why it was very important for me to learn German quickly and intensively.

2. What are your experiences in learning German?

The learning sessions of integration courses are highly compressed and the time available for the courses is not enough to develop important language skills – especially given the difficult conditions under which many Ukrainians came to Germany.

As a philologist, I knew that this was not enough. I therefore hired a private tutor, with whom I study regularly to improve my knowledge.

3. Do you have a favorite word in German?

Definitively “Eichhörnchen” (squirrel)! It sounds so funny – and even after all this time, I find it hard to pronounce it correctly!

4. What is your tip for anyone learning German?

Patience and immersion!

It simply takes time to learn a language. The most effective way is to immerse completely in the language – by listening, reading and speaking. Do not be afraid to make mistakes. Do not get discouraged, even if it is difficult. Languages open up so many opportunities and help us build personal or professional relationships.

5. What are your wishes for the near future?

Like everyone else, my main wish is for peace.

I also want to continue improving my German, find a job where I can develop and help others. In addition, I want to show my children that you should never stop learning and growing.

Thank you very much for your time. We wish you and your family all the best for the future!
