Series: Leisure activities at our locations

With around 1.5 million inhabitants, Munich is the third largest city in Germany, an important economic metropolis and a university city with a high recreational value. The capital of the federal state of Bavaria is not only home to the world-famous Oktoberfest, but also offers many cultural highlights. We give you 10 tips on how to make your late summer in Munich unforgettable.

1. Viktualienmarkt

A visit to the famous Viktualienmarkt is a must among Munich's highlights. The food market is open all week and is located in the heart of Munich's old town. Here you can find fresh local products as well as exotic delicacies, flowers and souvenir stalls.

2. Cinema at the Olympic Lake

What could be better in summer than a movie night in the open air? There is a daily pre-show and evening show at the Kino am Olympiasee. At weekends and on public holidays, there is also a special program for families during the day. Thanks to LED technology, the films can also be shown in daylight. You can watch many classics and new blockbusters here until September 14.

3. Surfer wave on the Eisbach

The surfer wave on the Eisbach is one of the most famous standing river waves in the world and has been surfable for 40 years. Here you can watch the surfers in peace and quiet. However, only professionals should get on a surfboard here. The Eisbach wave is located on the southern edge of the English Garden. It's definitely worth a detour for a walk.

4. Barbecuing on the banks of the Isar

Barbecuing is permitted at some designated spots on the Isar. On a sunny weekend, it's worth getting there early to get a good spot. With a blanket and plenty of food, you can enjoy the evening in a wonderful atmosphere.

5. Tour of the Olympic Stadium

The Olympic Stadium was the central venue for the 1972 Summer Olympics. The stadium is part of an extensive park that offers many other attractions, such as the Olympic Lake, the Olympic Tower and the Olympic Village. A walk through the park, combined with a tour of the stadium, is a great idea for a day trip in late summer.

6. Isarinselfest

The open-air festival takes place from September 6 to 8 along the banks of the Isar. Music, shows, cabaret and other program highlights are offered on four different stages throughout the weekend. Admission is free and there are numerous food and drink stalls.

7. The Allianz Arena

A visit to the Allianz Arena is not only exciting for soccer fans, the arena is an architectural masterpiece. A stadium tour gives you access to areas that are not normally open to the public. The stadium is also home to the “FC Bayern Erlebniswelt”, where you can learn more about the club's history and players and marvel at the numerous trophies.

8. Munich flea markets

In summer, you can visit numerous flea markets in Munich, for example on the Theresienwiese or in the Olympic Park. For all night owls, the night flea market “Midnightbazar” takes place about once a month with DJ music and street food.
